In 2024 I was one of the lucky winners of the ‘Picture This!’ competition, hosted by Lemniscaat. My works were selected alongside three other talented artists: Marlene Rebel, Femke Rutgers and Elisa Stolwijk. Lemniscaat is one of the oldest and most wellknown publishing houses for children’s books. Receiving positive feedback from them on my illustrations was a fantastic and encouraging experience. Below you can read the jury’s comments.

‘‘De warme sfeer en aantrekkelijke kleuren in de inzending van Sydney vallen de jury zeer positief op, en er is lekker veel verhaal te ontdekken in deze drie illustraties.
De ietwat rommelig ogende visser gaat samen met zijn vrienden Kat en Schaap de volle zee op om vis te vangen. Dat er een schaap meegaat op zee is al meteen grappig. En dat de visser vervolgens ook nog een zelfverklaard wolkenspecialist is, maakt dat je graag wilt weten wie deze rare snuiter nou eigenlijk is.
Ondanks de digitale techniek – iets waar de jury in het algemeen niet vaak warm voor loopt – is het deze illustrator gelukt om warme, humorvolle en unieke prenten te maken. Dat vindt de jury erg knap. De jury is ook erg benieuwd wat Sydney eventueel met analoge materialen kan; het tekentalent en oog voor compositie zijn overduidelijk al aanwezig.
De goed gelukte perspectieven en gezichtsuitdrukkingen in het werk van Sydney zijn prettig om naar te kijken. Ze maken de platen levendig en een lust voor het oog. Een verrassende en talentvolle winnaar met een eigen stijl.’

‘'The jury positively notices the warm atmosphere and attractive colors in Sydney's entry. There is a lot of story to discover in these three illustrations.
The somewhat messy-looking fisherman goes out to sea with his friends Cat and Sheep to catch fish. The fact that a sheep goes out to sea is immediately funny. And the fact that the fisherman is also a self-proclaimed cloud specialist makes you want to know who this strange guy actually is.
Despite the illustrations being digital - something that the jury is generally not enthusiastic about - this illustrator has managed to create warm, humorous and unique visuals. The jury thinks that is very clever. The jury is also very curious about what Sydney can possibly do with analog materials; the drawing talent and eye for composition are clearly already present.
The well-achieved perspectives and facial expressions in Sydney's work are pleasant to look at. They make the records lively and pleasing to the eye. A surprising and talented winner with her own style.'
